Make It Really Real

Today felt like a fantasy kind of day

Fantasy is defined as the faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable.

When we are younger our fantasies run wild. We would make the impossible, possible. We imagined ourselves as super-secret spies that saved the world daily. We were witches and wizards fighting off evil beings. Mermaids that soaked up the sun. Fairies that danced with lightning bugs and guided Peter Pan through Neverland. As we grew, our fantasies became more plausible. We dreamt of becoming firefighters, lawyers, and even movie stars. Then, we grew up. Now our fantasies center on seeking little moments of sanity from the madness of daily life. We daydream of becoming world travelers. We long to spend quality time with family and friends. We think about starting businesses or having a job we actually enjoy. Why do we not make these fantasies into realities?

Recently, I found myself daydreaming about leaving my job. It was nothing too dramatic. Just walking out during a mandatory meeting, picking up my purse and heading home. Which in essence is not a complex daydream. Since it is not that complex of a dream, I found myself asking the question; what is stopping me from quitting?

Money? Not necessarily, there is always some way to make money. If you have been fiscally responsible, money may not be the biggest deterrent. In some cases, money is the only reason people stay. If it is, then you need to make sure that when you do leave, you have somewhere else to go.

Lack of support? Maybe. I know not everyone would approve of my decision, but they would be supportive in my quest to find another job. Sometimes, you just have to do what works best for you.

So why do we stay? Why do we allow our simple dreams to stay dreams? I think what is stopping us from following our dreams is ourselves. We always find something or someone else to blame. We have to realize that to a certain extent, we are responsible for our circumstances. If you hate your job. Then it is your responsibility to find a job you like. (Which I am currently doing) If you’re unhappy in life. You need to do some soul searching to figure out ways to make it better. (Obviously, depression is a real thing, but sometimes forcing yourself to get out and do things can help) I am well aware this is easier said than done. However, we owe it to ourselves to try. Our greatest fantasies are doable. The only thing that keeps them as fantasies are ourselves.

Is the New Year the start of a new you?

Everyone is on a quest to build a better version of themselves. I mean, January is upon us and even if you hate the excessive inspirational posts, the pictures of meal prepping and all the other New Year, New Me antics are in full swing. Even if you hate it, there is no denying that it all motivates you. It is the beginning of a new year! There is no telling all the things that you can accomplish.  So get out there and start planning!

It’s over already?

The goals we are setting for the year are ending by week two. Why is that? Let’s think about it. How many people do you see on social media or interact with on a daily basis are talking about and actually planning how to become a better person? Everyone, right? Then in no time, the inspirational quotes, meal prepping, and the plans for trips end and they are back into their old habits.  It’s not because they were not trying.  We saw their plans on social media. So what happened?

You NEED Support!

When starting your journey you usually need some kind of support system. You have to surround yourself with others that have the same or similar goals. If you hang around people that do not want to better themselves, then change will not occur. That is why it is imperative to find people with the same interests as yourself. Even if you do not like to venture out, you need to get out there. Surround yourself with people that notice and mention your progress to you.

Is support that important?

Yes! A prime example is my mother and me. We work out together. Did either of us want to work out in the beginning? Absolutely not, but we need to get healthy. Even when we do not want to work out, we motivate each other to at least try. This is currently why my legs are sore and sitting down is a bit of a chore. However, we know in the long run that exercising is benefitting us. When I fail to see that my stomach is jiggling less, I have my mom there to tell me otherwise. I tell her that she is slimming down herself. That motivates me to want to continue working out. It encourages us to find more ways to get healthy. You need someone that continues to push you in the right direction.

Now what?

Now you have what you need to make this year your own. You have the motivation from social media and those around you to start planning your year. You know that you need the right person or group of people to keep you focused on your goal. Then once that falls into place, anything can happen. I know it may be easier said than done, but at least you have a road map. Please know that any time you try to better yourself in any way is the perfect time to start.
